In 2002, Michael Moore advanced a thesis in Bowling for Columbine to address the issue of gun violence in the U.S. He asked legitimate questions about the possible explanations for the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. He also raised the most pressing question of all “Why is there such a high number of firearm-related deaths in U.S.?” Among the explanations considered were poverty, the break-up of the family unit and violent history. He notes that countries whose citizens fare much worse than the U.S. in all these areas have only a small fraction of firearm-related crimes relative to the U.S. Why is that? Moore’s answer comes from the unlikely voice of Marilyn Manson, who suggested that perhaps the most efficient inciter of murder in the U.S. was its government.
