Some of us are old enough to remember what it was like to have the common sense not to provide our personal information just because an Internet company asked for it.
No, I did not forget my password. No, I did not attempt to log in from a strange location. Both sites have decided today that my longstanding account privileges will only be granted in return for my cell phone number. Maybe they’re fans of geotagging and want to help my friends check me in to Facebook Places. Or maybe they like to share my information with third parties who pay good money for cell phone numbers.Either way, I’ll live without email before I disclose my private information arbitrarily.
I will terminate my use of these services, just as I’ve terminated my use of Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg can take his new “social norm” and shove it. Brin and Page can do the same with their support of censorship in China.
